Parting Schotts: College Hockey Slap Schotts 2011-12: Week 13 -- Mike Ingoldsby's road to recovery

College Hockey Slap Schotts 2011-12: Week 13 -- Mike Ingoldsby's road to recovery

I have enough trouble dealing with a cold, which I have right now, so I can't imagine what the past year has been like for Union defenseman Mike Ingoldsby as he recovers from a concussion.

If you read my story or watched the video of my interview with Ingoldsby, you can see a student-athlete who has been struggling to get better. Ingoldsby gave a lot of detail and insight to what life is like for a player who is dealing with post-concussion syndrome.

Concussions have been a hot topic in sports, particularly in high-impact sports like hockey and football. In the old days, players played through a concussion. Now, thanks to plenty of scientific research, we now know the impact concussions have. We have learned that doing simple things, like reading and watching TV, are difficult because of prolonged headaches.

That was something Ingoldsby discussed during my interview with him Friday morning at Messa Rink. It was his first interview since he left the team last January. Ingoldsby suffered the concussion last Nov. 13 against RPI and missed eight games. He came back for the St. Lawrence-Clarkson weekend Jan. 7-8. But after having problems at a practice the following week, Ingoldsby realized he wasn't right. He would eventually withdraw from school before the end of the winter trimester.

There many things Ingoldsby said that provided some insight into how life is different for a person dealing with a concussion. But here are two memorable quotes. The first deals with how life is different from day to day.

?It?s really frustrating,? Ingoldsby said. ?There?s days when you?ll wake up and feel pretty good, and feel like, ?You know what, maybe I?m getting close.? The next day, you?ll wake up and feel just awful, and you can barely get out of bed and the headaches are bad. There?s a lot of symptoms that go along with it aside from just headaches that can be just as bad. You?re just tired. You don?t have a lot of energy.?

The next deals with handling school.

?It was hard for school,? Ingoldsby said. ?Just little things, like trying to concentrate, trying to focus just on a lecture. Trying to listen to the professors made the headaches a lot worse. Just trying to do the readings and writing the essays was getting to the point where I had pretty debilitating headaches.?

I believe Ingoldsby wants to play again, but he knows it won't be this season. But right now, it's more important for him to continue to get better. As we have seen with Pittsburgh Penguins great Sidney Crosby, who sat out nearly a year with a concussion, one seemingly innocent hit can cause the symptoms to come back.

Upset of the weekend
Alabama-Huntsville pulled off the shocker of the season Friday when it overcame a 2-0 deficit and beat Denver, 3-2.

The Chargers, who have had a turbulent season, which included the possibility of seeing the program downgraded to club status, started the comeback when Justin Cseter scored late in the first period. Mac Roy tied it at 2-2 late in the second period, and then assisted on Jamie Easton's game-winner with 2:41 left in the third period.

?I think that any time you start out the way we did, where all of a sudden we were able to get two goals fairly early in the first period, things are good,? Denver coach George Gwozdecky told USCHO.com. ?Certainly from that point on though, I thought we didn?t finish around the net, we didn?t finish some plays. We got a little bit reckless and a little bit lazy, and as a result gave them a chance to get back in the game.?

Smith hits 20
Colgate senior forward Austin Smith became the first player this season to reach the 20-goal mark. He got the goal early in the second period of the Raiders' 3-1 loss to Ferris State on Saturday.

Smith should be a leading candidate for the Hobey Baker Award.

Stat of the weekend
The RPI men's hockey team managed just 13 shots on goal in its 2-2 tie against Harvard on Saturday, which was two fewer shots than the RPI women's team had in its 3-0 loss to Cornell.

Tuesday hockey
Two Capital Region teams will be in non-conference action Tuesday. The RPI men host American International, while the Union women visit Connecticut. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Dutchmen stay 14th in USCHO poll,
return to USA Today poll

Despite a tie and win over the weekend, Union remained 14th in the USCHO.com/NCAA top-20 hockey poll on Monday.

The Dutchmen saw a 3-1 lead against Harvard disappear in the third period Friday, and had to settle for a 3-3 tie. Union cam back strong on Saturday, blowing out Dartmouth, 7-1.

Cornell is the highest-rated ECACH team in the USCHO poll. The Big Red moved from 13th to ninth after going 1-0-1 at Colorado College over the weekend.

Colgate dropped from ninth to 12th after losing a two-game series at Ferris State.

The Dutchmen returned to the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll after a one-week absence. They are 13th.
