Thursday marked one year since Netflix announced an unpopular price increase in the U.S. It has bounced back this year to revive its subscriber growth, though its stock remains 70 percent down from its peak about a year ago.

Here's a look at the developments over the past year:

July 12, 2011: Netflix Inc. says it will raise prices by as much as 60 percent for millions of subscribers who want to rent DVDs by mail and watch video on the Internet. The company decided to separate the two options so that subscribers who want both must buy separate plans totaling at least $16 per month. Netflix Inc. had been bundling both options in a single package starting at $10 per month.

Sept. 1: The price hike begins to take effect for existing customers. New customers had the new prices immediately.

Sept. 5: Netflix begins to offer its service in Latin America. Like its counterpart in Canada, the Latin American service is streaming-only, with no options for getting DVDs by mail.

Sept. 18: Netflix CEO Reed Hastings apologizes but keeps price hike in effect. Company creates more anger when it announces plans to split into two services ? Netflix for the streaming, and Qwikster for the familiar discs in red envelopes. That means subscribers have to visit two websites to make movie requests and update billing information. Hastings says the two businesses have different cost structures and benefits, and splitting would let each grow independently.

Oct. 10: Netflix backs away from its plan to split its two services.

Oct. 24: The company discloses that it lost 800,000 U.S. subscribers in the July-September quarter, ending with 23.8 million. That loss is more than the 600,000 that Netflix had predicted.

Nov. 21: Netflix announces plans to raise $400 million by issuing debt and selling its stock. The move raises new fears about Netflix's financial strength as it girds for losses next year. It would be Netflix's first annual loss in a decade.

Dec. 6: Hastings appears before an investors' conference in New York, where he laments the company's recent mistakes but predicts they will be forgotten as Netflix's Internet video service continues to reshape the entertainment industry.

Dec. 22: Netflix says Hastings's stock option awards will be cut by 50 percent to $1.5 million in 2012. His base salary remains unchanged at $500.000.

Jan. 4, 2012: Netflix delivers its first good news in months, sending its stock up 11 percent. The company, which delivers movies and TV shows online and by mail, says customers had streamed more than 2 billion hours of video in the fourth quarter.

Jan. 25: Netflix releases figures showing it regained almost as many U.S. customers as it lost following the price hike. It ended December with 24.4 million subscribers in the U.S., a gain of 600,000 from the end of September. It had lost 800,000 last summer.

Feb. 6: Verizon Communications Inc. and Coinstar Inc. unveil plans to challenge Netflix with its own streaming service to bundle with DVD rental kiosks operated by Coinstar's Redbox division. Getting an extensive library of streaming content to rival Netflix's will be expensive, though. Netflix, meanwhile, debuts its first original TV series, an eight-episode drama called "Lilyhammer," as it hopes to differentiate itself from rivals.

Feb. 21: As part of an effort to offer more exclusive material, Netflix locks up the right to show "The Artist" and other movies from The Weinstein Co. before the films are released to leading pay-TV channels such as Showtime and HBO. On the same day the multiyear deal is announced, Comcast Corp. announces plans to undercut Netflix with a less expensive version of a service that will stream old TV series and movies to devices with high-speed Internet connections.

April 23: Netflix says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years as it dealt with rising licensing fees and the bill for an international expansion. The first-quarter setback, however, was far smaller than analysts expected. In another encouraging sign, the company's subscriber growth accelerated during the first three months of the year, further evidence that the company is recovering from the price-hike backlash.

July 3: Netflix announces that subscribers watched more than 1 billion hours of online video in June, an indication that streaming video is getting more popular.

Thursday: One-year anniversary of price-hike announcement. Subscriber growth has returned, but even after a recent rally, Netflix stock remains more than 70 percent below its peak price of nearly $305 about a year ago.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Two former private investigators are facing sentencing on charges of allegedly using false identities to gain access to the phone records of Hewlett-Packard board members, employees and journalists.

Matthew DePante and his father, Joseph DePante, were to appear in U.S. District Court in San Jose Thursday, each to be sentenced to three years of probation and six months of electronic monitoring as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Both men plead guilty to conspiracy to commit Social Security fraud in February.

Federal prosecutors said the Silicon Valley tech giant had hired the DePantes' Florida-based investigation firm, Action Research Group, to track down who was leaking boardroom information to journalists starting in 2005.

The men conducted their probe during an 18-month period involving 33 people as their firm "garnered a significant profit as a result," prosecutors allege in sentencing documents.

"This pattern of serious offense conduct reveals a disregard for the privacy interests of the individuals that were the targets of ARG's investigations," the document said.

The DePantes' allegedly used the illegal practice of "pretexting" or pretending to be someone else to secretly secure copies of private telephone logs. The firm directed other investigators posing as account holders or phone company employees to illegally obtain personal information including phone numbers, Social Security numbers, birth dates and call logs, authorities said.

The firm made between $20,000 and $30,000 for its inquiries, court documents said.

During the covert operation, prosecutors said that HP and private investigators obtained the confidential information of the company's board members and employees as well as reporters for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Cnet and these reporters' families.

"The Social Security Number was an essential piece of information required to obtain the subject's telephone record and other information...," court documents said. "The Social Security Number is, for many Americans, the closely-guarded key of all of their financial and personal records."

The case began when then-HP CEO Carly Fiorina and other directors began checking into leaks of board deliberations to reporters.

A Santa Clara County Superior Court judge in 2007 dismissed charges against then-HP Chairwoman Patricia Dunn in connection with the case. The judge's decision came after the state attorney general's office reduced charges against several other defendants, including Matthew DePante.

"At worst, the conduct in this case amounted to boardroom politics and a betrayal of trust and honor, rather than criminal activity," the judge said, according to a transcript of his remarks supplied by the attorney general's office.

The judge said the investigation nevertheless "achieved much public good," including helping spur the passage of state and federal legislation specifically outlawing "pretexting."

In addition, the state reached a $14.5 million civil settlement with HP in December 2006, which was slated to fund state and local investigations into privacy rights and intellectual property violations.

Ancient domesticated remains are oldest in southern Africa

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Researchers have found evidence of the earliest known instance of domesticated caprines (sheep and goats) in southern Africa, dated to the end of the first millennium BC, providing new data to the ongoing debate about the origins of domestication and herding practices in this region.

The full results are published July 11 in the open access journal PLoS ONE.

The researchers, led by David Pleurdeau of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and Eug?ne Marais of the National Museum of Namibia, investigated remains from Leopard Cave in Namibia. They could not determine whether the remains came from a sheep or goats, but they write that there is no doubt that the teeth came from domesticated animals. These remains have been found associated with hundreds of archaeological findings, including stone and bone tools as well as beads and few potsherds.

The location and antiquity of the remains may provide further information about the domestication timeline, as well as potential movement patterns, for early herders in the region.

Google Maps soaks in some culture with indoor guides to museums

Google Maps for Android was recently updated their indoor location database with over twenty popular museums across the U.S, including the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cincinnati Museum Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, and 17 Smithsonian museums. 

Indoor maps originally launched in November, allowing users to set routes within buildings, navigate by floor, and sort through points of interest. It's an awesome feature, and a sensible extension of Google's current walking directions. Who knows, maybe indoor maps will expand to include audio guides that are sensitive to where you are within a building.

China's trade surplus up 42.9% in June

BEIJING: China's trade surplus rose 42.9 per cent year-on-year in June as demand from emerging markets offset stagnation in the eurozone and Japan, the government said Tuesday.

Exports for June were US$180.21 billion, up 11.3 per cent year-on-year, while imports rose 6.3 per cent to reach US$148.48 billion, the General Administration of Customs said.

This brought the surplus for June to US$31.73 billion, up 42.9 per cent from the same month in 2011, the customs bureau said in a statement.

Customs spokesman Zheng Yuesheng said China would be able to achieve its goal of 10-per cent growth in both imports and exports this year if the financial crisis in Europe did not worsen.

He attributed this partly to a diversification strategy to emerging markets.

"Trade growth almost stagnated with the EU, Japan and other traditional markets, but steadily grew with emerging markets," Zheng told reporters.

Exports for the first six months of the year climbed 9.2 per cent to US$954.38 billion, while imports rose 6.7 per cent to US$885.46 billion, according to the statement.

The trade surplus for the first half was US$68.92 billion, up 56.4 from the same period a year earlier, the statement said.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? With Lance Armstrong digging in for a legal fight, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency issued lifetime sports bans Tuesday to three former staff members and consultants on the cyclist's winning Tour de France teams for drug violations.

Luis Garcia del Moral was a team doctor; Michele Ferrari was a consulting doctor; and Jose "Pepe" Marti (team trainer) worked for Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel squads. All had been accused by USADA of participating in a vast doping conspiracy on those teams during part or all of Armstrong's seven Tour victories from 1999-2005.

Armstrong also has been charged and has declared his innocence.

Several hours after USADA announced its sanctions against the others, Armstrong's attorneys refiled a lawsuit asking a federal judge in Austin to prevent the case against from going forward.

U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks had thrown out Armstrong's initial 80-page complaint Monday, but invited him to submit a new one that was shorter, more to the point and less about his career and personal battles with anti-doping officials.

Armstrong's attorneys refiled a 25-page suit arguing that USADA violates athletes' constitutional rights, that the agency doesn't have the jurisdiction to bring the charges and that it may have violated federal law in its investigation.

Armstrong wants the court to rule by Saturday, his deadline to either accept USADA's charges and sanctions or send his case to arbitration.

An Armstrong spokesman declined immediate comment on the USADA bans issued Tuesday.

Under USADA rules, Moral, Marti and Ferrari had until Monday to challenge the allegations against them in arbitration or ask for a five-day extension. If they did not respond, USADA could impose sanctions.

Although none lives in the United States, USADA says the ban blocks them from participating in any sport that falls under the World Anti-Doping Agency code.

"The respondents chose not to waste resources by moving forward with the arbitration process, which would only reveal what they already know to be the truth of their doping activity," said Travis Tygart, chief executive of USADA.

There's been no indication from USADA that any of the three men ? who each received the agency's maximum punishment ? is cooperating with investigators.

Armstrong was granted his extension while he files his court case. Also charged and granted an extension was Armstrong's former team manager, Johan Bruyneel.

Another team doctor, Pedro Celaya, also has been charged and faced the same Monday deadline. A USADA spokeswoman declined to say if Celaya asked for an extension or for his case to go to arbitration.

USADA filed the charges against Armstrong and the others in June, laying out what it calls a vast doping conspiracy on Armstrong's teams when he was winning the Tour de France from 1999-2005.

Moral, who lives in Spain, was the team physician from 1999-2003. According to USADA, he helped riders use banned blood transfusion techniques to help boost endurance. He also helped them use banned performance-enhancing drugs including the blood-booster EPO and steroids.

Moral could not immediately be reached for comment by telephone or email.

Ferrari, who lives in Italy, was a consulting doctor for Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams from 1999-2006, according to USADA. USADA said Ferrari developed a special mixture of testosterone and olive oil to be placed under the tongue to help riders recover from races and training. He also helped advised riders how to use EPO and avoid detection.

Ferrari's lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment and there was no answer at Ferrari's home. The doctor already was banned for life by the Italian cycling federation in 2002.

Marti, of Spain, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Discovery from 1999-2007 and then Astana, helped deliver performance-enhancing drugs to riders in Europe and helped with injections, USADA said.

"Permanently banning these individuals from sport is a powerful statement that protects the current and next generation of athletes from their influence, and preserves the integrity of future competition," Tygart said.

Preclinical studies use specialized ultrasound to detect presence of cancer

From the air, the twists and turns of rivers can easily be seen. In the body, however, tracing the twists and turns of blood vessels is difficult, but important. Vessel "bendiness" can indicate the presence and progression of cancer.

This principle led UNC scientists to a new method of using a high-resolution ultrasound to identify early tumors in preclinical studies. The method, based on vessel bendiness or "tortuosity," potentially offers an inexpensive, non-invasive and fast method to detect cancer that could someday help doctors identify cancers when tumors are less than a centimeter in size.

Their findings were published in the July 6, 2012 online issue of the journal Radiology.

Paul Dayton, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering explains, "The correlation between vessel tortuosity and cancer is well-established. What's new about our finding is that we can visualize these vessels in minutes with a very quick scan, using very inexpensive imaging methods." Dr. Dayton is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The UNC team used a new high-resolution ultrasound method, called "acoustic angiography," with an intravascular contrast agent that allowed them to acquire images of only the blood vessels. "Unlike current clinical 'grayscale' ultrasound, this method filters out all tissue signals, so we can see small blood vessels clearly." says Dayton.

"Our results showed a definitive difference between vessels within and surrounding tumors versus those associated with normal healthy vasculature. The limitation that we must now address is that our method works only for tumors at a shallow depth into tissue, such as melanomas or thyroid cancer. Our next studies will focus on this imaging-depth issue as well as evaluating the ability of this technology to determine a tumor's response to therapy.

"We know from several clinical and preclinical MRI studies at UNC by Elizabeth Bullitt, MD, and others, and at other institutions that vessels can unbend, or "normalize," in response to effective therapy. We need to see if our inexpensive ultrasound-based method of blood vessel visualization and tortuosity analysis can detect this normalization prior to conventional assessments of tumor response to therapy, such as measurements of tumor size.

UK judge: Samsung not 'cool' so no patent problem

An ongoing global dispute between Apple and Samsung took an entertaining turn Monday, when a British judge ruled that Samsung's tablets did not infringe on Apple's design patents, as he put it, because "they are not as cool."

It's a Pyrrhic victory for Samsung: they are plainly the winner in this chapter of the legal battle (Judge Colin?Birss' decision means Samsung can sell its Galaxy Tab devices in the United Kingdom), but must suffer the ignominy of a firmly?worded legal document concluding that Apple's products are cooler.

The judge's opinion (PDF) is far from glib, though; his comments run to nearly 40 pages in describing and comparing the iPad, Galaxy Tabs, and a number of other tablet devices, new and old. The "cool" statement at the end is not said lightly, but sums up a number of observations, for instance, the minimalist front design and simple color scheme of the iPad. Having a logo and buttons on the front, ports on the side, and details on the back may not be cool design choices, though they are real design decisions that set the devices apart.

It is not the end for the Apple-Samsung feud, of course: there are many more suits in many other countries yet to be settled, including a very serious ban on Galaxy Tab imports here in the U.S. The justice system and sensibilities of judges may differ from country to country, but a strong decision like this may tip the scales in Samsung's favor.

After 18 months of controversy, the official verdict is in: an arsenic-tolerant bacterium found in California?s Mono Lake cannot live without phosphorus.

In 2010, a group led by Felisa Wolfe-Simon, a microbiologist now at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, reported online in Science¹ that the Halomonadaceae bacterium GFAJ-1 could include atoms of arsenic instead of phosphorus in crucial biochemicals such as DNA.

The bacteria were discovered thriving in the arsenic-rich sediment of the shallow saline Mono Lake, famed for its appearance on a picture-postcard insert to Pink Floyd?s 1975 album Wish You Were Here.

All known forms of life depend on at least six elements: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulphur. Arsenic has some chemical similarities with phosphorus, but is usually toxic to life, so the suggestion that it could sustain life triggered a storm of questions, as well as criticism about how the find was revealed at an enthusiastic NASA press conference (see ?Microbe gets toxic response?).

As a result of the controversy, when Wolfe-Simon's paper appeared in print in Science last June, it was accompanied by eight technical comments^2?9 from scientists responding to it.

Rosie Redfield, a microbiologist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, set about testing the finding. Earlier this year, she said that she could not reproduce Wolfe-Simon?s results in laboratory experiments (see ?Study challenges existence of arsenic-based life?).

Redfield is now a co-author of one of two papers that confirm that, although the bacteria can tolerate arsenic, they do depend on phosphorus. The papers were published^{10, 11} by Science on 8 July.

Toxicity tolerance
Redfield and her colleagues report¹⁰ that when GFAJ-1 bacteria were grown in a medium containing arsenic and a very small amount of phosphorus, their DNA contained no detectable arsenic compounds, such as arsenate (the arsenic analogue of phosphate). In the second paper, Julia Vorholt, a microbiologist at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, and her colleagues report¹¹ that the bacterium cannot grow in a phosphorus-free medium in the presence of arsenate. It can, however, grow in low-phosphate conditions in the presence of arsenate. GFAJ-1 ?is an arsenate-resistant, but still a phosphate-dependent bacterium?, the team writes.
