Best Buy Co. Inc.?
plans to cut 2,400 jobs, from its 1,050 stores, according to MBJ sister publication, the Minneapolis-St Paul Business Journal.According to a company statement, 1,600 of the layoffs would occur through the company?s 1,050 stores, which is an average of two employees per store. The total also includes 650 Geek Squad division employees. Best Buy?s Geek Squad services appliances and televisions in customers? homes.
The employees? last day will be Aug. 1.
In March, the Richfield, Mn.-based retailer, which has five stores in Memphis, announced plans to shut down 50 stores across the U.S., in a move that would eliminate 400 jobs. The company also announced a new store concept that would center around service, in order to compete with online retailers like Amazon.
No stores in Memphis were included on the closure list.
