Top 4 Owned Pets and Statistics | Health Testing & Drug Testing ...

The American Pet Products Association (APPA) conducts surveys every two years to calculate pet industry trends and statistics. In 1988, the first year the survey was conducted, 56% of U.S. households owned a pet. The 2009-2010 survey notes that 62% of U.S. households include a pet.

Spending on pets has increased from $45.5 million in 2009 to $47.7 million in 2010.

The following statistics were compiled from the American Pet Products Association 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey.

Dogs

-????? There are approximately 78.2 million owned dogs in the United States.

-????? There are approximately 46.3 million households that own a pet dog.

-????? 39% of U.S. households own at least one dog.

-????? 28% of owners own two dogs.

-????? 12% of owners own three or more dogs.

-????? On average, owners have almost two dogs (1.69%).

-????? The proportion of male to female dogs is even.

-????? 21% of owned dogs were adopted from an animal shelter.

-????? On average, dog owners spent $248 on veterinary visits annually.

-????? 78% of owned dogs are spayed or neutered.

Cats

-????? There are approximately 86.4 million owned cats in the United States.

-????? There are approximately 38.9 million households that own a pet cat.

-????? 33% of U.S. households own at least one cat.

-????? 52% of owners own more than one cat.

-????? On average, owners have two cats.

-????? More female cats are owned than male cats (80% versus 65% respectively).

-????? 21% of owned cats were adopted from an animal shelter.

-????? Cat owners spent an average of $219 on routine veterinary visits.

-????? 88% of owned cats are spayed or neutered.

Freshwater Fish

-????? There are approximately 151.1 million owned freshwater fish in the United States.

-????? There are approximately 11.9 million households that own a pet fish.

-????? Fish owners generally have more than one fish.

-????? There are 171.1 million pet freshwater fish in the United States compared to 11.2 million saltwater fish.

Bird

-????? There are approximately?16.2 million owned birds in the United States.

-????? There are approximately 5.7 million households that own a pet bird.

-????? There are over 40 million pet birds living in the U.S.

-????? Female lovebirds often amuse their owners by shredding up the paper lining on their cage and placing the strips between their tailfeathers. This is an instinctual behavior that would allow the bird to carry materials back to her nesting site for construction.
