Ice fishing fanatics up the Ottawa Valley are poised and ready for one of the busiest weekends of the season.

This weekend, Ontario residents will be out enjoying the merits of Family Fishing Weekend -- a province-wide initiative celebrating the sport of winter angling, and without the otherwise mandatory fishing license.

Six years ago, it was decided that a festive winter fishing weekend would be adopted to mirror National Fishing Week events during the summer. The Ontario government has, this year, officially designated Feb. 16-18 as license-free.

Anyone who plans to enjoy winter angling this weekend must remember to abide by conservation license limits set out in the Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary.

Arnprior Fish & Game Club

Thanks to my old pal Blake Corbin for a heads up on his Club's Family Fishing Weekend event in Arnprior. The Arnprior Fish and Game Club, local OPP and fire fighters have teamed up for another great ice fishing derby Saturday. The event takes place in Arnprior on the Goodwin's Bay portion of the Ottawa River, and runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Gear and plenty of mentors will be available to assist all newcomers or curiosity seekers. Come out and catch a great time with refreshments available on-site. For more information contact (613) 435-5377 or Blake.Corbin70@gmail.com

Castleford derby

The eighth annual Castleford charity ice fishing derby runs from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday. Take note that fishing is permitted only from the Cheneaux Dam to Arnprior on the Ottawa River. The weigh-in is located at the junction of River Road and 2014 Thomson Rd., 10 minutes west of Arnprior. Thanks to support from the community and local business, the Castleford charity ice fishing derby has grown into a huge annual event with thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to be won. A banquet will be held at the Horton Recreation Centre after the derby featuring great food and live entertainment. For more information contact Ron Ferguson at(613) 284-6603

Lake fun for kids

The Ottawa Region Walleye League (ORWL) is holding its fourth annual kids ice Fishing Event Saturday on Constance Lake. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the event. ORWL members will be taking care of all the equipment and bait. Guests are asked to bring their own gear where possible so that rods can be given to those who never have the opportunity to ice-fish. Hot dogs and hot chocolate lunch break comes at 12:30 p.m., followed by grab bags and photos. For more information contact orwl.icefishing@gmail.com

Sportsman Show coming up

Next weekend, Ottawa's Ernst & Young Centre (Formerly CE Centre) plays host to some 25,000 outdoor enthusiasts. The Ottawa Boat & Sportsman's Show is eastern Ontario's largest outdoor recreational event and a great opportunity to browse the latest in outdoor gadgetry, new watercraft and see some few familiar faces. With the Sportsman Show controversies south of the border, it will be interesting to see the number of firearm dealers on site this year.
