Chandigarh: A mahapanchayat, organised by various farmers? groups at Rewari?s Aasalwas village on Sunday, threatened to launch an agitation next month if the government does not find an amicable solution to the land acquisition row in the district.
While the mahapanchayat was chaired by Dayaram Bagthala, the chief speaker on the occasion was Bhartiya Kisan Union?s (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait.
The government has already constituted a joint committee, comprising of government representatives and 11 members from farmers? organisations, to find a solution. ?For a farmer, his land is the only source of income in life, thus we cannot let the government acquire it at any cost. As such acquiring fertile land is neither in the interest of the farmer, nor the country. If the governments keep acquiring fertile lands in the name of industrialisation, it shall lead to a foodgrain crisis situation in the country,? Rakesh Tikait said.
?Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had promised us that the government will not acquire farmers? land but he has failed to keep his word. If the government backtracks from its promise, we shall intensify our agitation,? said Ramkishan Mahalwat, district president of the Kisan union.
On the other hand, representatives of the Rewari district administration told the farmers that the state government intends to solve the demands of farmers in a peaceful and amicable manner.
In July, farmers had protested against the state government?s decision to acquire 3,500 acres of land in various villages across Rewari for a multi-model logistic hub. The government also set out to acquire 350 acres for a residential complex adjacent to the district administration headquarters in Rewari.
